Shaun Swingler is a freelance multimedia journalist based in Cape Town, South Africa. I knew him on International Journalist Net Work, be a journalist of the month, link shared by Mas Harry Surjadi. This feature provide conversation format and I interested to his quotes. “Don’t wait for permission to make something that’s interesting or amusing to you. Just do it now. Don’t wait. Find a story idea, start making it, give yourself a deadline, show it to people who’ll give you notes to make it better. Don’t wait till you’re older, or in some better job than you have now. Don’t wait for anything. Don’t wait till some magical story idea drops into your lap.”..yea don’t wait you’re older!
I know, many freelance journalist out of there. Bu this world is strange for me. How to “selling” my ability, share the issue, do the passionate article etc. That quotes knocked my head to wake up. I remember all my “disperate” projects. I really hopeless with my self, discomfited and all the useless mind stayed in my head. Everything looks like ruins to me. Shaun wrote for me: When is your deadline so I can check up on you? Because I will check up!
May be it is an ordinary conversation in the very very late night <in Jakarta time, 5 hours earlier than Cape Town> but I fascinated with what he have done.He concern to trafficking issue, knife criminal, gangster in Africa etc. I like the way he wrote features and the angle of his photographs for some issues. Particulary, I learn how to be a freelance journalist. He wake up me-he doesn’t even know- that I can do something, not only seeing the window, update FB status and wait the money drops from the vanilla sky. Huh! <but I think FB status is part of writing, isn’t it?!>
I remember my friends around me who supported me, but I forgeted them to pursuit something even I don’t understand, what for?! Just need to smile in the morning and trust to our self. Yes…my self and God 😀
When I opened my eyes, fill the morning with smile <and a cup of black coffee>, my friends called me to do some projects. One of them, travelling to almost 36 islands for do something that I love: make a features. Than finished some books: lovely book about flower- this is the story of my partner in coffee shop, travelling to covered Phinisi Boat. Sharing about writing etc. And the last project, may be sound likes “mission imposible” to make the story <I have no courage to mention> about famous person that I admire of. How bussy I’m! How crazy I’m.
So, that is the journalist world. Sometime, without we know, what we have written gave different effect to the readers out of there, a thousand miles from our key board. Can be inspiring when they read in the right time or can make war in the wrong time. Thank you, Shaun! Check up my deadline and sure, that is nice to hear your progress.
About this sketch, Shaun write: it really looks like me…<may be I’ll open the sketch bureau yeaa>
